Wilm U Starts Composting Program on Earth Day

April 21, 2010

Wilmington University is excited to announce a brand new composting initiative. On Earth Day, Thursday, April 22nd, we will officially begin recycling all of our compostable Café waste. These materials will be taken to the Wilmington Organic Recycling Center where it will go through a variety of processes that in the end, yield compost.

At this time, this effort will be concentrated in the Café and the adjacent eating area. The Café staff will have collection containers for their compostable waste in the kitchen. In addition, special receptacles for compostable items have been placed in the DAC lobby, just outside of the Café, for use by those who eat in the Lobby area. Signage on these containers will indicate what items are compostable and those items that should be disposed of as trash. A list of compostable items has been attached.

During this initial phase, this activity will be taking place in the Café areas, however, you are encouraged to take compostable materials, such as cardboard, to the collection dumpster located on the north side of the DAC building adjacent to the Stahl Post parking lot. We are presently throwing all of our cardboard waste in the trash. The University now has an opportunity to dispose of cardboard in a more sustainable manor.
